The West and the East are moving in—and three hacker lovers are searching Tanzania for the place that can change everything: THE SURFACE! The first issue of a mind-bending action SF epic drawn by the esteemed LANGDON FOSS (Get Jiro!, Winter Soldier) and colored by the Eisner-winning JORDIE BELLAIRE (everything)! THE SURFACE!
AzM review [SPOILERS]
This week I struggled to decide if the top pick of the week should be "Howard the Duck #1" by Marvel or "The Surface" from Image Comics, in the end, I went with Kot & Foss mind-bending yarn that tackles the simulation hypothesis that contends that reality is in fact a simulation (most likely a computer simulation), of which we, the stimulants are totally unaware.
"What would happen if Moebius and District 9 had a baby?"
The above phrase on the early marketing of this book got me interested enough to buy it and read it, the art does remind me of Moebius but I found the very little resemblance to District 9 and a lot of it reminded me of The Matrix Trilogy
Despite these similarities "The Surface" stands on its own with a very unique and brilliantly crafted world, its characters are as strange as one would envision the future inhabitants of a planet earth to be like in a society living on the edge of a technological singularity
This comic is laden with clues, easter eggs and story enhancing devices from the front inner page to the last back page, a special attention should be given to the three-part (I only found two parts) interview titled:
"Elusive Writer Maintains "It All Makes sense At The End.Maybe."
I think this is going to be a great comic series that due to its complex subject matter may turn some readers off and limit some of its potential audience, I for am sold and will pick the next two issues to see how its story will unfold.
AzM rating: 4 of 5 Stars
